Paragraph 1: Introduction - explain your lab. The lab that I chose to do was the “McGraw Hill Higher Education: Natural Selection - Virtual Lab.” I chose this lab because it was the one that most interested me, as I liked the format of the virtual lab. In this lab, I was able to manipulate both the environment and the allele frequency in order to record and investigate the generational breeding patterns of a group of organisms.
Biology, the study of life and living organisms, is complex and encompasses a multitude of theories and ideas. In AP Biology, the first unit covered was evolution. Chapters 29, 31, 39, 40, 41, 42, and 43 in the textbook, Campbell’s Biology in Focus, not only discusses the four main ideas of biology: evolution, energy, information, and systems, but it also gives examples of each in order to help guide the reader’s understanding of the concepts. The first big idea of AP Biology is: “the process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.” Chapter 39 in the textbook encompasses this main idea through discussing natural selection and genetic diversity.
In this natural selection and genetics lab, a pair of alleles was randomly chosen from a cup of 100 alleles. There were 50 dominant and 50 recessive alleles. A pair of alleles was chosen randomly from the cup. The first time this was done all the organisms survived. The second time this was done the organisms that were homozygous recessive died due to the lack of an enzyme needed to digest grain.
Environmental change plays an important role in evolution. When an environmental change occurs, it can be a physical or chemical change. It can also be a gradual process such as the formation of mountains, or it can be a rapid and unexpected change, such as a natural disaster. When changes in organism’s environments occur, they must adapt to their new environment, this can cause ample amounts of selective stress and pressure on organisms, causing some species to eventually die out, while other organisms strive and evolve to be better adapted to this change.
Do dreams have an evolutionary function? In this essay I will discuss Flanagan’s reasons for believing consciousness is an adaptation, I also will discuss why sleep is an adaptation and his stance on dreams being spandrels. And I will end with my opinion on why dreams may or may not be significant based on Flanagan’s theory and the treat simulation theory. I will also discuss the reasons why or why not dreams may have an evolutionary function.
THE EVOLUTION OF THE CARCHARODON CARCHARIAS (SHARK) for my research task, I chose to study and track the evolution of the shark. These beasts being one of nature’s top predators in the world and dominating the oceans surrounding our continents. I chose these fierce creatures as they were a perfect example for me to use in explaining the evolution and the branching of evolution purely based on the fact that they have been around for millions of years through prehistoric times changing and evolving into different forms living in different areas and different depths of the world, as we see they are a large amount of shark species in the oceans all coming from one place. Which will be discussed in further detail throughout this research task.
¬ The steps that are necessary in evolution by natural selection are variation, heritability, differential reproduction and lastly the prevalence of the traits. Variation is essential for natural selection because as variations of certain traits are selected for or against across generations, the population is set to evolve. An example of this would be mutation. Mutation is a change at the genetic level which means a change in the DNA.
Organisms can evolve to enhance their ability to catch prey, or flee predators. Coevolution occurs in a predator-prey relationship when the prey evolves in response to pressures exerted by its predator. The predator then evolves in response to the changes in the prey (or vice versa). Inheritable adaptive traits evolve through natural selection, the process by which organisms that have developed favorable traits are capable of surviving and reproducing at greater rates, thus passing their adaptive traits to their offspring.
