John McPhee uses a variety of literary techniques in his novel to explain the magnitude of the situation at hand. In the novel Contr¬ol of Nature, specifically the chapter “Cooling the Lava,” Similes help to explain the volcanic eruptions and their aftermath in effective ways as most people are unfamiliar with what they are like. By using the device, it grabs the reader’s attention making them more likely to try and understand the situation. A volcanic eruption also deals with lots of technical and political jargon that can be uninteresting or difficult to understand, by using comparisons this language can be made more colloquial allowing readers with different types of background to comprehend and enjoy the novel. The literary device allows McPhee to provide a sense of clarity to a foreign situation.
Was it The Lack of Instinct or Knowledge? In the short story “To Build a Fire” by Jack London the main charter has to use instinct and knowledge to get through the cold ridged Yukon. He is new to the land and as London writes, “The trouble with him was that he was without imagination,” and in the long run that is what hurt him (629). He thought he knows everything he needs to know about the land and how cold it was going to be; he thought his instincts would help him.
Since, he was a kid, he 's wanted to know about life and its meaning. He had searched for meaning in life. " It is my will which chooses, and the choice of my will is the only edict I must respect." This demonstrates that he now realize that he is the meaning in life. He is overcome with the emotional experience of his understanding; he has the right to risk his own life.
Throughout history man has had countless deadly interactions with nature, but man will never be able to defeat nature. In the literature by Jack London, the article, by University of Washington and Robert Service we can learn about some of the few times that man has lost against nature. In all of these stories the Man vs. Nature conflict is apparent to anyone reading these stories. In “To Build a Fire,” Klondike Gold Rush, and “The Cremation of Sam McGee” these writings have many similarities in its treatment of conflict as well as the differences. In all of these readings the weather is harsh and very cold.
Fire holds a central place in this novel; it is used numerously throughout the story for good and bad reasons. On the good side, it can be used for clearing thick tree growth so sunlight can reach the forest floor and encourage the growth of native species. Also, fire frees these plants from the competition delivered by invasive weeds and eliminates diseases or droves of insects that may have been causing damage to old growth. It can also be used to help the society in solving their problems. However, this is also used for the bad in this story.

The settings in these stories, the Yukon in “To Build a Fire” and an island in the south Atlantic in “The Most Dangerous Game”, take a toll on the main characters in a very different fashion. Both of these short stories provide excellent demonstrations of this topic but the most obvious are the environment The Man is in, the, application of nature in Rainsford’s survival, Connells animal-like description of Rainsford, and the symbol of fire. We see in “To Build a Fire” that The Man is constantly plagued by the icy tundra he finds himself in.

In “Thirty Acres” by Dr.Philippe Panneton and “Volcano” by Nancy Lord, the nature destructive force in the two prose are fire and the volcano, which symbolize the isolation, destruction in emotion and life, as well as the new changes in life. The explosion of the volcano makes Julia think of her dull life and fells despair as she know that she can't change anything, and the fire gives Euchariste a punishment for his greed and brings changes for his and his son’s relationship. The destructive force of nature in “Thirty Acres” and “Volcano”—fire and volcano symbolize the two protagonists’ isolation. When the volcano is going to blow up, the dust and cloud “feel like a curtain,” which make Julia stay at home, revealing the isolation between her life and the outside world.

The husky that he is traveling with has a natural instinct and understands, seemingly more than the man, that traveling the Yukon Trail in the freezing cold temperatures is extremely dangerous. The man soon learns how cold it is when he spits.
The short story of a man wandering across the Yukon Territory in midwinter creates a multitude of feelings in the reader. However, no feeling is stronger than the suspense about the survival of the main character. The man sets out alone to cross the Yukon Territory alone, despite warnings about the dangers of doing so. These dangers as told to us through through the eyes of a narrator develop the anticipation that keeps the story entertaining. Jack London’s effective use of basic literary techniques such as narration and conflict in the short story “To Build a Fire” is successful in keeping the reader involved throughout the story.

To Build A Fire is a short tragic tale by Jack London that narrates about a man’s last days on the earth. The story’s protagonist is passing through the sub-freezing land of the Yukon when he becomes the victims of an unforgiving and harsh force of nature. Before embarking on the journey, the man is warned against walking alone on such severe weather conditions and even if his instincts also warn him, he decides to ignore all the signs and his conscience and to follow his ego. He makes several attempts to light a fire but does not make it. It is after several attempts that the man finally gives in to the forces of nature and awaits his now evident death.
