Sylvia’s insight on nature in the short story “ The White Heron” creates a theme of birds beauty and well being. The author uses great details of beauty, respect, and how the birds revolve around the whole story. The author puts many of species of birds in this story such as crows, white heron, robins, cat birds, and hawks. The birds give us a sense that they are intelligent and have utter beauty.
In the beginning of the story Sylvia, Sylvia's grandmother describes a vivid scene of how Sylvia attracted a flock of Jaybirds. This gives us a scene that Sylvia attracts nature and birds, it's showing a peaceful image. Later in the story, Sylvia is with the young hunter in the forest finding the White Heron. From her quote is gives detail and a scene of beautiful forest scenery with birds singing, almost like a opera house. There comes to scene in the story where Sylvia is climbing up the vividly described oak tree to see where the mysterious White Herron’s nest is. This gives a sense that she is entering the birds world or home from the struggle she is facing climbing the tree. Once Sylvia is up on the top of this giant oak tree she describes her first sight. She says “ Toward the glorious east flew two. Hawks with slow-moving pinions. Their gray feathers were as soft as moths. Sylvia felt as fs she too could go flying among the clouds”. This quote gives us detail and description of the birds world, it’s utter beauty. Sylvia even feels she could almost be a bird and go flying with them. This shows how much respect and jealousy of the birds. Later in the tree scene Sylvia finds the White Heron and describes its beauty as having a “ slender neck, and Crested head”. From her having a revelation of birds beauty and elegance she keeps the location of the White Heron secret. At the end of the story she describes the horror of the young hunter killing the beautiful birds. She
