A symbol is meant to express something other than itself. In Macbeth, Nature is a symbol. It represents more than just itself; it also represents Macbeth and his reign. Macbeth is a Shakespearean play about the perils of ambition. Macbeth, encouraged by his wife, attempts to eliminate the obstacles inhibiting him from being king. These hindrances happen to be other characters in the play. He accepts the prophecy of witches as a guide for what will be, and misjudges what they tell him. Ultimately his overconfidence leads to his demise, believing that he cannot be harmed when in reality he is just a mortal like everyone else.
