Octavia Butler’s novel Kindred is a very good representation and exploration of the idea of nature vs. nurture. Through the characters of Rufus and Kevin, The author examines how environmental factors can shape an individual’s character. Rufus, a slave owner’s son, is a product of his environment and his upbringing, leading him to be cruel and hostile towards slaves. Meanwhile, Kevin is the product of two different worlds: the modern 20th century and the 1800s surrounded by slaves. The development of Kevin's character is a case study of the power of nurture over nature.
The book Native Son contains many themes relating to the ways many black are mistreated and the injustices they face. In Native Son Bigger is used to represent the everyday stereotypical black male. Bigger is put into many situations that an African American would face and his mentality only adds to the trouble as he tries to cope with his life and his race. The theme I believe is most influential on bigger and the situations he is in is Nature vs. Nurture because society may affect the ways he views himself and what he should do. I also believe that the world only plays a part in some of his life ,but he seems to believe he is not destined for greater which is shown throughout when he results to wrongful actions.

The Study of Twins by Bailey and Pillard When researchers are very interested in studying that genetics has a big factor in the appearance of certain characteristics or homosexuality, they knew that the best thing to do is to take a look and study the people who are closely and very related to each other. Michael Bailey and Richard Pillard performed a research study and they compared 56 monozygotic twins or identical twins which have exact same zygote and fertilized egg, 54 dizygotic twins or fraternal twins and 57 genetically unrelated adopted brothers. The first research study relating to this topic was carried out by Koch 1966, who suggested that twins who were placed in separate classrooms were more advanced in speech and IQ than twins who were placed in the same classroom. (Koch, 1966). However, later in 1970 Leeper and Skipper disagreed arguing, “It appears that the placement of twins in the same or separate classroom seems to have little effect on their achievement, social adjustment and acceptance” (Leeper and Skipper p.15,1970). It is seen as a debate in many cases, but one specifically, is the topic of child killers; kids who before they became adults did the unimaginable and killed another person. Goldsmith and Harman (1994) adopt a neutral position, in which both nature and nurture influence people, stating that they “believe that the fundamental issue concerns the interplay between characteristics of the individual and of the relationship” (54). Goldsmith and Harman discuss temperament and attachment for infant, with temperament being linked to the nature side of the debate and attachment being linked with the nurture side; as a result, the infant’s temperament influences the attachment bond between the infant and the mother, but the attachment bond influences the temperament of the child as well. Therefore, both nature and nurture interact with each other to produce people’s behaviour (Harman et al. 54). Andersen and Berk (1998) take on the nurture perspective, while Leary (1999) claims that nature is the determining factor of a person’s personality.
