It has been long debated over the importance of nature versus nurture in a child as they grow into an adult. Both of these things seem to play a major role in a child's life and development. While nature has to do with genetics and what the child receives from both the mother and father, nurture is the environment they grow up in, how they are raised and what type of things they are subjected to. David J. Linden author of The Accidental Mind and Roger R. Hock author of Forty Studies That Changed Psychology both share very interesting studies that explain nature and nurture and how these things may affect a child growing up. Nurture affects the development of mental functions and personality more and it overall makes someone the person they become. Studies have been done on identical twins and their growing up. While nurture plays a big role in the development of a child, so does nature. Identical twins, also known as “monozygotic twins”, whether raised together or apart tend to be similar in terms of extroversion and openness. When identical twins are raised apart they have personalities that are more similar than non-identical twins raised apart. When a monozygotic twin is raised in a middleclass household they tend to score the same on a general intelligence test as his/her twin raised in a wealthy household (Linden 54).
