In Need of Help
Americans are often not aware of what is going on outside of the United States; however, just as third-world countries suffer from a lack of necessities, so does our own nation. What has recently been brought to the author 's attention that she is now putting on the table – what is occurring in the Navajo Nation? The beautiful and vast Navajo Nation “extends into the states of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico, covering over 27,000 square miles” (Navajo Nation 's DIT). F1. Figure 1
With such a large area, it is almost tough to believe that it has “only thirteen grocery stores and three hospitals – all which are miles apart” (@lilnativeboy). “Compared to non-Native women within the U.S., Navajo women experience domestic violence and sexual assaults at a greater frequency and intensity” (Navajo Nation Human Rights Commission). There is a loop-hole in the Navajo Nations law that men from outside of the Navajo Nation have been taking advantage of. The women of this nation are being put in danger due to the nation self-governing system. While they wish to continue this way of government they do not wish to put their people in danger. “Non-reservation members are not subject to tribal law or prosecution. And that fact has led Indian reservations to become a safe haven for rapists” (Wear Your Voice).
