Navajo Tribe The Navajo tribe was one the tribes in the southwest areas in North America. The tribal origin was the Southern Athabascan (McGary). The tribe had many names that it went by such as; Navaho, Diné, and then Navajo which means “the people” (McGary). The tribe had many home territories in the southwestern region. With being able to have a great amount of people and a great amount of land as well there was also great amount of food and traded that was also needed. However when it came to language and speaking with one another they only had one language to communicate within such a large tribe. In the southwest sheep and goats became a permanent part of the economy and culture of Pueblo and Navajo peoples (Calloway). However, the traditional Navajo diet contained eating boiled mutton and corn, which the corn was prepared in a range of different ways. Also they would obtain flour by taken it through a slight leavening process, then make it into the type of cooked over the embers small cake that is found with Mexican tortillas (Unknown, What Did The Navajo Indians Eat). They could have learned this by the Mexicans because they were so close to Mexico but also because they learned other crafty things from the Mexicans. Also the Navajo diet goat’s meat was a well-known aspect however pork and bacon was a largely disliked in the community (Unknown, What Did The Navajo Indians Eat). Therefore, because goats were known as a permanent aspect in the economy in the southwest it is likely that they were eating the goat for food but also trading the goat and sheep as well. Other foods that were eating by the Navajos prior to European influences include acorns, antelope, cottontail rabbits, elks, grapes, pinon nuts, wild potatoes, yucca fruit, rats, pumpkin, and much more (Unknown, What Did The Navajo Indians Eat). The food would be gathered in large groups of people and travel to find the food to later prepare the food.
