About the Celebration
The Navratri Festival is from October 10-19. It is a Hindu festival that is usually celebrated in the Eastern and Northeastern states of India. Navratri is sometimes celebrated about four times every year, every time for nine days. The Navratri Festival is nine nights and ten days long. This festival is celebrated for various reasons and in different ways across India, but the main reason is the same, to celebrated the victory of good over evil. One of the main reasons worshipping Goddess Durga, for her killing Mahishasura. There are also many other reasons why people celebrate this festival, but worshiping Goddess Durga is one of the main reasons. Goddess Durga is the goddess of empowerment, change and time. In Sanskrit, Navratri actually means nine nights, since Nava means nine and Ratri means nights. On these nine nights, people dance and sing in a circle. One of the dances that they do is called the Garba dance. It is a traditional dance performed by women, but sometimes men dance too. Women dance in a circular motion with a pot on their heads.
