The speech was a very informative speech, addressing students with various facts and praises of the foundation of North Carolina Central University. NCCU is in fact praiseworthy. In 1910, James E. Shepard founded NCCU under the unique name, “National Religious Training School and Chautauqua for the Colored Race”. James E. Shepard was a pharmacist and religious educator, whom graduated from Shaw University, and later on in 1895, he married his wife Annie D. Shepard. Mrs. Shepard was the one who wrote the lyrics to North Carolina Central University 's Alma Mater, “Dear Old N.C.C”. She even wrote the column “A Moment of Meditation” in the Federation Journal. Mrs. Shepard did a huge contribution in the making of NCCU. Mrs. Shepard served on the Executive Board of the North Carolina Federation of Negro Woman’s Clubs.
