The whole debate started when people thought that it was quite strange for a country to have a national icon that is a murderer and that as a country we are a disgrace to praise a murderer. Yes, as Australians we do recognise that we do in fact support a criminal. Perkins, born in 1936, spent his early childhood in a police-patrolled compound in Alice Springs. He was not part of the stolen generation within the sense that he was not forcibly removed from his mother, however, he did spend his childhood and adolescence away from his family. Perkins reported having an unhappy childhood, plagued by racial vilification and social alienation, and was generally being treated as an inferior citizen by his peers. This childhood motivated him to go to university and eventually facilitate other indigenous Australians to follow suit.

His key role in the Freedom Ride allowed him to successfully advocate for the desegregation of Australian institutions and towns as well as to reduce the amount of discrimination against Indigenous Australians. He fought for what he thought was right and in killing men he wasn’t doing much wrong as the Civil War killed thousands of men. He killed men without the real need to, though, and tried to start a revolt in an area that hardly had any slaves at all.
Keating was a teacher that could perceive as good or bad in different situations. A bad teacher is not a bad person, but a bad teacher can be a bad teacher due to his ways of teaching. He steered his students off the mundane course that was set by Welton and their parents. This could be seen as good due to the fact that he gave them a different outlook on life and helped them gain the confidence to make their own decisions.
