The whole debate started when people thought that it was quite strange for a country to have a national icon that is a murderer and that as a country we are a disgrace to praise a murderer. Yes, as Australians we do recognise that we do in fact support a criminal. But what people don't realise and look deeper into is that it’s not the murderous thug side of Ned Kelly that we support and love but the unique true Australian qualities that he upheld through his short life. Most other countries know Australians to have a laid back culture and an easy-going nature, which Ned did have.
Charles Perkins had a big impact on Australian history, specifically Aboriginal rights, through the post-war era. Perkins, born in 1936, spent his early childhood in a police-patrolled compound in Alice Springs. He was not part of the stolen generation within the sense that he was not forcibly removed from his mother, however, he did spend his childhood and adolescence away from his family. Perkins reported having an unhappy childhood, plagued by racial vilification and social alienation, and was generally being treated as an inferior citizen by his peers. This childhood motivated him to go to university and eventually facilitate other indigenous Australians to follow suit.
The Sentencing of Nathaniel Abraham Nathaniel Abraham, age eleven, cold blooded killer. Some would refer to the young boy as this, because in 1999 Abraham took the life of Rodney Greene. There is a lot of conflict of this subject, because he was only eleven. The question stands; Did he plan this?
Charles Perkins played a major role in the Freedom Ride in order to shape Australian society from the 1960’s onwards. His key role in the Freedom Ride allowed him to successfully advocate for the desegregation of Australian institutions and towns as well as to reduce the amount of discrimination against Indigenous Australians. He endeavoured to make a change in Australian society, and wanted to expose the true nature of discrimination and segregation against Indigenous Australians. He wanted to gain the rights and freedom for his people, and effectively achieved those goals. Therefore, Charles Perkins did play a major role in the Freedom Ride from the 1960’s onwards, resulting in the improvement of Australian society.
The Cold War was a war of ideologies and propaganda. Hence, the smallest display of failure or mistrust on one side meant a great advantage for the other. This is exactly what McCarthy did in the 1950's. He created and developed a period of negativity in his time as a senator. By doing so, he gave the Soviets an advantage, and he weakened America's image internationally.

The quality of living of the aboriginals were far from what was pictured and recited in the national anthem, the indigenous were in fact nowhere near to being young or free. In fact, Grant pinpointed that indigenous people generally lived a shorter life as compared to average Australians. Although the aboriginals are the minority of the country, they are a quarter of those locked up in jail. Stan Grant emphasized on the ratio of the population of indigenous people to that of the prisoners in Australia to highlight the prejudice against the aboriginals. Even the indigenous youths and children are more likely to fall victim to being jailed than to become high school
John Brown is seen by some as a hero and by some as a villain. Some believe is to be hanged for treason, while others believe he shouldn’t. I don’t believe he is a hero or a villain. He fought for what he thought was right and in killing men he wasn’t doing much wrong as the Civil War killed thousands of men. He killed men without the real need to, though, and tried to start a revolt in an area that hardly had any slaves at all.
Keating was a teacher that could perceive as good or bad in different situations. A bad teacher is not a bad person, but a bad teacher can be a bad teacher due to his ways of teaching. He steered his students off the mundane course that was set by Welton and their parents. This could be seen as good due to the fact that he gave them a different outlook on life and helped them gain the confidence to make their own decisions. It could also be seen as bad because he failed to give them a proper education.
