The Story of Neferet and Menkhaf The silence in the large house echoed around him, his eyes opening to see the bright sun light filtering in through the window. The nobleman’s eyes slowly opened to find that his fine linen sheets tangled messily around his body. Sitting up carefully, his mind groggy and fuzzy from the banquet the night before, he got up. Throwing his legs over the side of his bed, his eyes casually scanned his bedroom. He saw his cabinet bursting with messy clothing made of fine linen. He made a mental note to remind his servants to clean up that mess. A rustling by the doorway disrupted his thoughts and sent him jumping off the bed, startled. “Who is there?” he demanded. Looking out across the extensive land she owned, her eyes examined her growing crops and fruit with her eyes. She was lucky to have the land her late husband had amassed through hard work. Though, as she stepped back into the house to fix breakfast, she found a lack of food filling the cupboards. “Akhenaten! Breakfast is ready!” Neferet yelled to her son that had yet to appear before her. Setting a small bowl of fruit on a bench, she positioned the reed mats they are on opposite each other. She cringed as her son entered the room, dressed in a kilt and sandals made of reeds, as he eyed the bench of food. They usually had some bread with breakfast, but since her husband’s passing the extra duties left the wheat grinding unattended. She promised herself that she would work on making bread today. “I’m going to head into town and start selling the crops we collected yesterday, Akhenaten,” Neferet said to her son. “Please go down to the river and collect some water. Also, begin to gather half of our harvest so that I can bring it to the temple for taxes.” Picking up the basket of crops she had gathered the day before, she walked out of her house and headed into
