However, they fail to realize that politicians are constantly presented with conundrums where people’s will contradicts what they think is right. Their job is to do the right and just thing, and not necessarily what people want.
Sophocles’ play, Antigone, sets up Creon as the tragic hero from the beginning. Creon is the tragic hero because his stubbornness is his biggest flaw. He is the tragic hero because he is selfish and he does not listen to others, which causes his downfall. Creon’s stubbornness caused his downfall.
Creon shows an extraordinary amount of stubbornness throughout the story. An example is seen when Antigone wishes to give her brother, Polyneices a proper burial so he can have a pleasant afterlife with the Gods. Creon, as king wishes to have him rot in the fields because he turned his back on the state in which the events occurred.

He had ruled that Eteocles would receive a decorated military funeral, while Polyneices would not be buried at all. It is true to say that his law violated our custom of honoring the deceased, especially during wartime. However, he considered Polyneices a traitor for attacking Thebes and putting the kingdom at unnecessary risk. His actions threatened the safety of the kingdom, which Creon must protect, seeing it is his duty as king. When Sentry went to Creon with concerns about the law, Creon stated, “Is it your senile opinion that the gods love to honor bad men?”
Sophocles depicts the contrast and clash between two people with opposing views in his play ‘Antigone’. One of those people is Creon, the highly motivated king of Thebes who takes pride in his own decisions that he believes to be right and sensible for the state and believes in a form of justice that can’t be compromised. The other person is Antigone, the protagonist and the daughter of the earlier king of Thebes, Oedipus. She places her faith and adheres to the irrational laws of religion and goes against the laws of man, thus defying common reason. Throughout his speech Creon was able to effectively achieve his purpose of convincing his audience to agree with his decision on not burying Polyneices with the use of contrasting diction. In order to convince his audience that his way of ruling is the correct way Creon uses the rhetorical device of contrasting diction in his speech. This is done when Creon announced, “Eteocles, who died as a man should die, fighting for his country, is to be buried with full military honors, with a ceremony that is usual when the greatest heroes die…”. When talking about Eteocles and his honorary death, Creon uses words with a positive diction such as “honors, ceremony, and greatest heroes”, each of these words are linked to the positive connotation of a man with honor and great dignity. On the other hand, when speaking of Polyneices, Creon turns to the use of negative diction.
People have many different reactions when given power. The reaction is usually either one where they use power for a greater good and to guide others in a better situation, or they can misuse the power given and take advantage of the circumstances or others to make themselves feel even more dominant and in command. In the play, Antigone by Sophocles one of the main characters , King Creon, abuses his power to take superiority of others and in an attempt to gain control. The misuse of power is more frequent than the use of power for the favorable, even in many current events.
