During the early 19th century into the early 20th century, Britain was in their “Britain Imperial Era”, but British imperialism can date back to the 16th century (Marshall). British Imperialism was the period when Great Britain was expanding their empire into territories such as India and Africa. During this time, The British Empire was one of the biggest empires in history and it had many major negative and positive impacts on the cultures, politics, and economies in these territories.
British imperialism had many negative effects on India, such as including economic exploitation, cultural suppression, and political oppression. The British exploited India's resources to enrich themselves, which would lead to widespread poverty (Wolpert). Africa's traditional lifestyles and culture were destroyed due to the British pushing their own beliefs onto the Africans. The Europeans had no interest in traditional African culture and had no concern for the Africans(Lincoln County School). Due to British imperialism, many Africans wanted to escape the colonial military and administrative abuses through avoidance tactics. Hearing of approaching colonial armies, tax collectors, or labor recruiters, many Africans fled their homes or hid themselves to avoid violent confrontations and dispossession(Moyd).
British Imperialism caused economic exploitation in Africa by taking their natural resources, such as gold and diamonds. The British would exploit these goods to fuel their own industry and economy (Lincoln County School) . The British would even force Africans to do hard work for very low wages. Taxes and tariffs were also forced on Africa, which made it difficult for Africans to make a living. This would lead to a cycle of poverty and economic dependence on Great
