The positive sides of World War 2 World war II had a huge impact on the world, but nowhere has the impact had more effects than in the UK. World War II changes Britain immensely and put a bloody end to the British Empire, an empire the world had seen reigning for over 400 years. Britain changed a lot both during and after World War II, not just in the sense of economy and politics, but Britain also changed dramatically when it came to the British culture and social life. And when the British Empire crumbled, a stronger and better nation would be born, a nation born in war and economic unstability. Prior to the war, the gap between the rich and the poor was at an all time high, but after the war, the social classes merged more together and social inequality became rarer in the British culture. There are many reasons behind why this happened. When London was bombed, everyone was in the line of sight, not just the poor. This caused the British to feel more compassion for each other and it wasn’t unusual for private residents to offer strangers a seat in their bomb shelter. Another case is when officials evacuated children into shelters on the rural parts of Great Britain. Poor kids as well as rich kids were transported together and that caused the kids to converse with each other on a whole different level than before. With social security nets and a well functioning welfare state, the biased towards the poor and the rich soon faded. The British became more connected; they began to care for each other on a whole different level then what they had previously done, which might also have been a reason for the post-war governments focus on eradicating “The Five Giant Evils”. One young girls eyewitness accounts of the celebration of Victory Day in London is a great example of when the new spirit first was awaken. She tells the story of how people pored out into the streets, singing and dancing with American sailors. This joy would last for years and would not only cause an effective workforce, dedicated to working to rebuild London, but it would also produce a baby boom that caused the population of Britain to expand to new heights. This would cause the government to have to use more money on kindergartens and social support for mothers, which also caused an economic downfall, but this would later turn positive as the British workforce now had more working
