When you think of poetry the last thing that pops in your head is this could save lives, but in Rob Baker’s “Jimmy Santiago Baca: Poetry as Lifesaver” he claims that poetry is more tha just a form of writing, it can save lives. Baker used Jimmy Baca’s life to drive his main point in his essay. Jimmys life changed “many times in his life” (893) Baker used these points in his life to display how poetry and writing can change lives. Bacas life had a rough start.
The author’s intention in this book is to advise all people, from children to young adults, to understand that everyone is going to face life’s struggles. Life can throw severe situations at anyone at anytime. The choices you make in those opportunities can cause consequences that better your life or change it for the worse. These two men, were born into an atmosphere where violence and drugs were present in their daily life. The narrator states, “Fear and apathy had become the new norm in what had once been a close-knit community.
Tonight as I was putting Addison asleep with Becki Addison was afraid of the thunderstorm. She would flinch at every bang and crash. At one point as we rocked a loud bang shook the house and Addison said daddy I 'm scared. As I held her and said that it was OK and I was going to keep her safe, she took a deep relaxed breath she said I love you daddy. As Matt probably knows what I 'm talking about the feeling of being your little girl 's protector and her safe place to feel at ease.
For my first poem, I chose to construct this piece in the form of a “title poem,” using a direct quote from Jason Reynolds’ novel, Long Way Down. In doing so, I labeled my poem, “Title Poem: ‘Somewhere between guilt and grief”’ (Reynolds 218). Reynold’s protagonist, Will voices this line when describing the empty eyes of his Father and Uncle. By combining Reynolds’ literary and my own poetic technique, I was able to create a moment inside Will’s mind and what he was possibly thinking while staring into the lifeless eyes of his family members.
Julia Alvarez, in her poem “’Poetry Makes Nothing Happen’?”, writes that poems do play a role in people’s lives. She supports her idea by using relateable examples of how poems might change someone’s life. Her first example is simple, poetry can entertain someone on long drives. This does not only aply to long dirves however, Alvarez uses this to show that poetry does not have to have a big influence on someone’s life, instead it can affect a person in the smallest of ways, such as entertainment. The second example describes poetry comforting someone after the loss of a loved one.
Through these themes of the poems, they show what the minds and lives of those whose lives revolve around
This proves that Jack is confident about poetry because he is being inspired by other poetics and he is now starting to write his own poems. Throughout the book, Jack’s thoughts about poetry have grow from timid, then he changed to reluctant and enthusiastic, and now he is confident about poetry because he is now starting to enjoy poetry more and write his own
Author’s lives inspire their writing in many ways. An illustrious writer, Edgar Allan Poe, experienced continuous sufferings throughout his life. The heartaches he faced transferred into his writing. Poe’s works are dark and traumatic, such as “The Pit and the Pendulum.” He uses the unthinkable and shapes short stories out of them.
The poem, Useless Boys,is one that portrays a feeling of indignation, rebellion and finally, understanding by two boys who grew up with bitter views of their fathers’ onerous jobs. The narrator believes that the only reason his father stays at his job is for the money. In his naivety the son does not realize that at times living selfishly is the way things have to be. Sometimes commitments are made in a self-sacrificial and cowardly manner. No matter how “wrecking” his father’s career, he stays in order to provide for his family.
The surgical operation he had gone in his forehead makes him lose his status as a hero in the emotional reaction of despair as other prisoners watch. In analyzing this poem, the main point of focus is that the poet achieves a contemplative mood by listing surface events that are emotional in nature. Looking at the structure of the poem first, the poem has 42 lines or sentences. Most of the sentences are complicated with the poem employing the use of verb-nouns in a normal way. The poet also includes some enjambment, some end-stopped lines and a title that precisely explains what is going on in the poem.

Todd discovers what Mr. Keating meant when he said, “Now we all have a great need for acceptance, but you must trust that your beliefs are unique, your own, even though others may think them odd or unpopular” (Dead Poets’ Society). Todd discovers what it means to be an individual. Throughout the movie, he develops all the qualities of a Bildungsroman hero, even the ones Neil never could reach. Dead Poets’ Society is the coming-of-age story of several different teenage boys; as the boys develop with each other, they all go through the development differently, but they all come out of it as individuals.
Although it is not stated clearly, the texts have many evidences that point towards their fate. Moreover, with the change from a third-person narration to a bystander-style narration, it further highlights the inescapability of their situation and hence, amplifies the tragedy and arouses the reader’s pity for the characters. In short, the texts illuminate the lack of social movement, where children are doomed to follow the footsteps of their family, a tragic but unavoidable
In the poem “For Poets”, by Al Young, the theme is the challenge of stepping out of your comfort zone and seizing moments in life. Young expands and argues his theme through the literary devices used in the poem. These literary devices include symbolism, hyperbole, and metaphor. Al Young portrays life’s obstacles, our society’s attitude towards self expression, and experiencing nature. Todd is a shy and timid young man. He is a new student, he is Neil’s roommate. Todd does not have much self confidence. His parents are always comparing him to his older brother. Throughout the movie you see him gain confidence and come out of his shell he has been hidden in.
