House Churches… the Next Best Church! Neil Cole sets up a very nice argument in His Organic Church book. I have learned that Cole is making the argument that churches are more alive in the home environment where we bring church to the people instead of bringing the people to church. Cole states from a bumper sticker “I love Jesus; it’s Christians I can’t stand.” (xxii) This statement clearly states the issue that Cole is trying to relay to the church. Keeping in mind that not all churches are bad churches we can’t ignore the elephant in the room, there are churches who don’t want to reach out to their local communities. One example is when Jesus speaks to Peter and says upon you I will build my church. He said that the church would be built on Peter. This means that every step we take to share Jesus that we would be building on the foundation that was already laid. He shows us that the Church was made to be a growing vessel and we are to steward that which we have been given. Jesus has every intention for the church to continue growing. As long as there are unbelievers we need to continue to grow our church spiritually as well as in numbers. The health of the church is dependent upon its relationship with not only people, but the Lord. Cole points out in this reading that church doesn’t have to meet in a building designed for services. We can meet anywhere in the world, but as a church we must pray together in order for our church to experience the growth in which we should be experiencing.
