In The Dead Poet Society the English teacher, known as Mr. Keating or, if you are slightly more daring “O’ Captain my Captain” of the renowned Welton Academy boarding school, has some very unorthodox ways of teaching. Such as the dangers of conformity and sheltered thinking and pushes them to “suck the marrow out of life”. Mr. Keating’s motto, “Carpe Diem,” inspires the young kids to pursue new things, but brings cynical views from his fellow teachers. Mr. Keating is an instant hit with the youth of his class. One student finds his picture and summary of his life at Welton. They find that he was in a club known only as the dead poet’s society. None of the other students had ever heard of such a club. Neil Perry was put into Welton by his over-controlling father. His father states that he has sacrificed so much to get Neil here and that Neil should therefore follow the predetermined path that his father has paved in front of him. This path consists of nothing but focusing on grades and school work to eventually go to Harvard. This becomes painfully clear in the first few scenes of the movie, when his father forces him to drop out of the school newspaper. Even though Neil loves what he does, he follows his father’s orders. Through the progression of the movie, Neil takes Mr. Keating's advice to follow his own path to heart. He trys out for a school play, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and lands the main part. He talks to his shy roommate, Todd Anderson, about his predicament. He knows his father will not approve of him being in the play but he admits to Todd that acting is his true passion. Neil decides to go through with the play without letting his father know. Consequently, his father learns of his participation in the play and demands that he quit on the eve of the performance. Not knowing where to go, he turns to the teacher that got him there, Mr. Keating. Mr. Keating tells him what he has told him all along, to follow his own path.
