A great deal of forgetting happened within the first three chapters of Nervous Conditions, and so little people in the family were upset by it other than Tambudzai.
Some of Tambudzai's family members left her to seek a higher education. These people included her brother, Nhambo, her Uncle, Babamukuru and therefore her cousins Nyasha and Chido. Tambu was not concerned when her brother left to go to the mission to receive his education, although she was slightly jealous as a person should be. The leaving of her cousins and her uncle brought on more sorrow than with her brother leaving. The main issue Tambu had was when they all returned (Babamukuru, Nyasha, and Chido from England and Nhambo from the mission) and had forgotten their entire culture. The mission Nhambo was attending, and Babamukuru the headmaster of, was a Christian establishment. This meant that the main language spoken was English,

Nevertheless, Tambu would have been angry at him given any circumstances. Her main issue was with Nyasha. Nyasha had been Tambu's best friend and best playmate before she moved off to England for five years. Tambu thought nothing of the move and the effects it may have had on Nyasha's culture until the celebration of their return. When asking her to join in on a dance, Tambu could not understand why Nyasha did not accept her offer with arms wide open. It took Maiguru, Nyasha's mother, telling Tambu that her daughter did not speak Shona anymore to set off a fire of anger within Tambu. She was bewildered that through the education they had been receiving
