Formal Paper: Neuropsychology and Neurological Surgeon Throughout life, there are choices. Unfortunately, the same applies to careers. However, these choices change as life goes by to fit more into the life of the person that has to make the decision. For a neuroscience major, two career options from which to possibly choose includes becoming a neuropsychologist and a neurological surgeon. Each have different skills and requirements with each having in different outcomes. Neuropsychology is an area of specialization within clinical psychology. As a neuropsychologist, or as a potential neuroscience major, I would be studying the relation between the brain and behavior. A neurological surgeon diagnoses, evaluates, and treats patients with disorders or injuries affecting the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems (Neurological Surgeons). A significant point concerning this job is that it involves high levels of stress, complex cases, and long hours. A career as a neurological surgeon will require lots of stamina for long hours with surgeries lasting from an hour to fifteen depending on the intricacy of the procedure. With the long hours, draining cases and stress a sense of humor is handy in order to deal with their work. The general duties of a neurological surgeon are to assist and care for others, make decisions that are the best solutions for the problems, and to keep up-to-date to apply new information needed for their jobs As well as document, record, and maintain information and analyze information. Tools and technology used in this profession include: surgical scissors, surgical lasers, surgical clips/clamps, electrosurgical equipment, and medical software (Surgeons). The typical education needed for entry as a surgeon is a doctoral or professional degree as well as clinical training. In pursuit of becoming a neurological surgeon, I will need to become part of a neurological residency program. Licensing is required by all states in America and certification is recommended. The salary range is $235,510 to $310,433 to $419,769+, with a median hourly wage of $90.00+ (Surgeons). Alternate occupations that are similar to becoming a neurological surgeon are veterinarians, registered nurses, and
