Is hope and love enough to change fate? The authors of Never Let Me Go, written by Kazu Ishiguro, and The Hunger Games, written by Suzanne Collins, force their characters into similar struggles with different circumstances, throughout each of the novels. Never Let Me Go and The Hunger Games go through many similar conflicts including love triangles, the idea of hope, and trying to change fate. Both authors visualize the novels in a future tense and create a setting within very corrupt societies. never Let ME Go is about clones raised to donate their organs to their "models." The victor is given riches to symbolize the "generosity" of the Capitol. Never Let Me Go and The Hunger Games are similar in the fact they both include a love triange. In NEver Let ME Go, there is a love triangle between Kathy, Tommy, and Ruth. Ruth and Tommy are together throughout most of the book, but when Ruth is close to death from giving donations, she encourages Kathy to become Tommy's carer, since they did not have the chance when they were younger, even though they always liked each other. "I'll stay with Kath. If we're splitting, then I'll stay with Kath" (Ishiguro 167). Kathy and Tommy get to spend the little time he has left together. Throughout the book, the students at Hailsham believe in the idea of deferrals, which means if they are a couple, they can have a few years together before they begin giving donations. This is why Ruth convinces Kathy to be with Tommy. She believes Kathy and Tommy, together, will survive a little longer. In The Hunger Games, the love triangle is between Gale, Katniss, and Peeta. In Never Let Me Go, hope is given when rumors of finding "possibles or models" begin. "Possibles" are people who the clones think look like them. The clones come to believe that their lives can mirror their "possibles". Ruth and her friends drive to Norfolk to search for her "possible" to give Ruth hope of a future life as a normal human being. "They reckon this person's a possible. For me" (Ishiguro 319). They come to find out it is not her "possible", curshing her "dream future." In The Hunger Games, Haymitch believes the head gamemaker, Seneca Crane, should give the people something to root for, young love. Therefore, Seneca creates a new rule that if the two tributes were from the same district, they could both be victors. However, in the end, Seneca took back the rule amendment of having two winners and said that only one victor could remain, putting Katniss and Peta against each other, to fight for their lives. For a moment, hope was taken away from both Katniss and Peta. "The berries have just passed my lips when the trumpets begin to blare" (Collins 345). In the end, they gambled against the games and won their hope back, at least until a new game began. The characters of each novel believe hope is prevalent in their futures. In Never Let Me Go, the characters have much hope and attempt to chase it down by finding "possibles." They also try to verify the ability to defer their organ donations, but their hope is
