There is an old saying that goes “nice guys finish last.” Unfortunately that is often the case. So it is refreshing to read of a company that seems to prove the opposite is true. Sometimes nice guys finish first. That is the case with New Belgium Brewing Company. A true rags to riches success story in which the company is found and built on principles other than just the bottom line. New Belgium was built upon the idea of making world class beers but with an uncompromising commitment to its employees, the environment, and the communities in which it operates. This commitment has resulted in tremendous company growth, fiercely loyal employees, and devoted beer drinking fans all over the country. But with tremendous growth comes the danger of moving away from the core values that made the company successful in the first place. History is filled with examples of companies which grew too fast and seemed to lose their way as profits superseded previous commitments to values and ethics. New Belgium is a company that believes in togetherness. They prove this through the various cultural events in which employees from across the country are brought together to build relationships, learn, and grow collectively as a company. The biggest event like this is the annual company retreat.
