During the late 20’s and the early 30’s, economy was on the rise. New inventions were being created, there were many job opportunities, and the stock market was on the rise. When all of the sudden, everything changed. The stock market fell. Jobs were lost. People tried to get all of their money out of the banks. Chaos was arising. America needed a hero. This was when FDR, or Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected as president in 1933. Citizens believed he was the answer. He had lots of problems to solve while in his presidency. In “African Americans and the New Deal, the documents starts with, “Most New Deal programs discriminated against African Americans” This was only the beginning. The article goes on to say that the FHA had lower pay scales for Black Americans (African Americans and the New Deal 1). This is discrimination to give higher pay for Whites and not Blacks. One of the New Deal’s program called the AAA, “forced 100,000 blacks off the land in 1933 and 1934” so rich White landlords manage to earn more money (African Americans and the New Deal 1). These men had enough money to keep them well for a long period of time, but greed held them in a tight hand, forcing poor Black farmers off lands, leaving them homeless. This was a problem that FDR could have fixed. Franklin also could have also passed the Anti-lynching bill. Lynching can be described as, “to put to death, especially by hanging, by mob action and without legal authority” (dictionary.com). This means any white could go and hang a black for no reason without being arrested. Many African Americans were being killed for no reason. FDR did not try to pass this bill because he, “feared that conservative southern Democrats, who had seniority in Congress and controlled many committee chairmanships, would block his bills if he tried to fight them on the race question” (African Americans and the New Deal 1). If Franklin Delano Roosevelt went through a little bit more work, he could have accomplished the needs citizens needed desperately. These needs were feeding the poor and equal rights. This is critical today because we still face these problems. Many children in Africa are starving because of loss of food. We need to help those families. We also still fight for equal rights. It is important to learn from past mistakes so that the problems we did not face correctly do not repeat
