The New England and Chesapeake colonies were established during the early 1700s. Despite the population originating from England, the regions had distinct societies. This was due to the fact that many settlers voyaged to the New World in search of riches, to seek new lives, or for religious freedom. They differed socially, politically, economically, and geographically.
The New England region was built on Puritan culture with an economy that relied on the Triangle Trade to establish a political and social structure. The New England region includes present day Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. Puritans originally settled in the region and brought with them their culture; Puritans were happy with their English heritage
In 1606 British settlers came to the Chesapeake region in search of wealth and a better life; in 1620 Puritan settlers came to the New England region in search of religious freedom and a better life. Both groups had their woes, be them indians, disease, or famine, but eventually began to spread out and colonized. The Puritans created New England as a chance to live their lives in a Puritan society with Puritan values. The settlers of the Chesapeake region colonized in the south as a chance to work the land and gain wealth. Both the settlers of New England and Chesapeake settled to search for a better life, beyond what could be offered to them in the old world.
The New England had very little fertile land, with extreme weather and rocks frozen to the dirt making agriculture hard. In time, they would create a diverse agricultural system to create food for its inhabitants which included fishing as the citizens became top notch shipwrights. So, it turned to industrial endeavours due to the high number of raw resources in the region. The higher population, due to the fertile nature of the inhabitants, could easily support the growing industry of New England. Due to its isolated location with possible enemies surrounding them, the Puritan beliefs tied the families of New England together and united them.
New England Culture I. In 1620 the Pilgrims on the Mayflower landed on Cape Cod. Later, they settled in Provincetown. In 1614, Captain John Smith called this region New England. The states that occupy New England are, Main, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
The British colonies are most mainly on east coast of North America. The very first permanent settlement in North America by the British is Jamestown, in 1607, for economic purposes, but the colony was not successful until John Rolfe smuggled tobacco in 1614. After the founding of tobacco, Jamestown became the very first successful chesapeake colony, colony founded on economic purposes. After Jamestown, in 1620, Puritans were trying to escape religious conflict in England and has set sail towards the America and on the ship they have signed the Mayflower Compact, the very first representative government document. The Puritans then landed in the America and founded the Massachusetts bay colony.
As a result of my research on the assets found in the New England Colonies, I’ve found both positive and negative factors that could impact the result of relying on their region for aid. Based on these findings, the New England Colonies have different characteristics such as geography, climate, politics, economics, specializations, resources, and society that each affect the amount of trust we can permit them with as a beneficial aspect to our cause. After traveling through their region, it has been noted that the climate consists of short, yet moderate summers, and long, cold winters. The statement “Economic issues played a larger role in the settlement of the English colonies than religious issues.” is wrong in the essence that religious issues affected the settlement of the Northern Colonies more than economic issues. Religion had a larger effect than economy on the English colonization of the northeast coast of North America. Many people fled from England to escape religious persecution. One group of these people were called the Puritans. The Puritans deemed the Church of England to be corrupt and in need of “purification”.
New England was a very diverse community that combined two completely different cultures. The Puritans were very traditional and followed the church till the very end. They kept communities small and genders divided. The people of the church also did not trade with their neighbors to keep their religion uninfluenced. The new generations living in New England embraced capitalism with open arms and separated their church and state powers.
The religion in the New England colonies was really important for the New England colonies which affected mostly everything. For example, it affected their economy and government, etc. The people of New England are the religiosity people out of all the colonies. 3. The men and women dressed up in their colony because it was really all a part of their religion.
New England was a colony that was settled because the people that came from England wanted to find their freedom from their country. The people that came to the United States was to find freedom through religion, which the people from Mother England were not given the freedom to pursue their religious believes. The first settlement in New England was when John Winthrop came to the United States. In this settlement came the founders of the colony of New England. Basically the people from the first settlement were the ones that set up the way that the people were going to live and the type of government that they were going to establish and follow.
The New England Colonies were a very religious place, and traded very many items. They had a high economy, and also disagreed very many times with the Natives. John Winthrop, the governor said, “For we must consider that we shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us, so that if we deal falsely with our god in this work we have undertaken, and so cause him to withdraw his present help from us, we shall be made a story and a byword through the world.”
The New England colonies were first founded in the last 16th to 17th century as a sanctuary for differing religious groups. New England was made up of the Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. New Hampshire, however, was formed for economic reasons instead of religious ones. The Chesapeake region, which is made up of the colonies of Maryland and Virginia, was founded by the British colonies for the purpose of farming. However, by the 1700’s, despite both being settled by Englishmen, New England and the Chesapeake region had developed differently.
The three main colonies that we hear about are Virginia, Plymouth, and Massachusetts. These three colonies basically define all the others, as each group and its main founder either went for a personal financial gain or to escape religious persecution. Virginia was originally settled by Captain John Smith and grew into a successful trade colony through tobacco. Plymouth was originally founded by the Separatists and was lead by William Bradford. Eventually the dwindling Plymouth joined with Massachusetts which was originally Puritan based.
New England colonies had a hot/humid climate so they weren’t able to do any farming like the southern colonies.
