Brandon Rose 3/25/23 Infant and Adolescent Literature Professor Hart New Kid by Jerry Craft The plot of the book New Kid, by Jerry Craft follows the character Jordan Banks. He is a kid from Washington Heights New York, who is sent to a very large and prestigious school named Riverdale Academy Day School. This new school is very different than where Jordan was before. It is much larger, a different in many ways, not all being good ways. Jordan is forced to overcome problems such as racism, bullying, and relationship problems. There is not necessarily a main conflict of this story, but there are many minor issues that are similar to each other that may be able to be seen as a main conflict. The supporting characters are Jordans friends from Washington Heights, and the new friends that he makes at his new school. I believe that the antagonist would be those who make fun of Jordan. If I were to pick a main antagonist, I would choose Andy. This is because Andy mainly picks on Jordan and bullies him one on one. Jordan just wants to be able to fit in at his new school and to stay connected and not become distant from his old friends. The roadblocks are just the different environments and experiences that his old friends and the people at his new school have lived through. They are very different groups of people, but this does not mean that they cannot come together and become friends. The problem Jordan has is dealing with the bullying and racism at this new school, and trying to fit in with everyone, who is different form his old friends. While also trying to connect with and stay close with his old friends who are watching him grow and may not be too fond of it. The good characteristics that Jordan has to help him overcome this is that he is genuinely a good person, who looks for the best in those around him. He uses this to gain friends and he even helps connect old friends with new friends. Jordan grows very much in this story. Not just to overcome adversity, but to grow to be comfortable in his new environment which almost seemed impossible at the start of the
