The hospitality and tourism industries leave a footprint on our Earth and potentially have environmental issues connected with water consumption, water and solid waste, energy use, and the added footprint of the visiting tourist (GDRC, 2001). The global environmental footprint of a company is the determination of the company’s “excess consumption of natural resources” (Mitryasova, O., Pohrebennyk, V., Kochanek, A., & Stepanova, O., 2017). Breweries have become a popular attraction for leisure activities bringing in more customers. Microbrewed beer has been brought into the mainstream and breweries are popping up across America making an impact as an industry. Generations have developed the beer culture in Europe, but the American craft beer scene is a thriving hotspot with entrepreneurs opening their establishments across the country. The Brewers Association reports 6,372 breweries in the U.S. in 2017, 16% increase from 2016 (Brewers Association, 2018). We observed the management of employees being very relaxed and it was obvious that each employee cared about the company’s policies and did not need to be micromanaged. The staff demonstrated that they share similar views and goals and they were informed about how the company was being mindful of the environment. Members of our research group have friends that are employed by the New Republic Brewing Company and they told us about the recycling efforts that are established by the company. One employee shared with us about how the brewery sends non-alcoholic waste to a pig farm for recycling. The company has to take an extra step of separating waste products, so they do not send the farm waste that has alcohol. This effort demonstrates the brewery’s goal of being environmentally
