The sudden death of Franklin Roosevelt left Harry S. Truman in a tough situation with the war going on, Truman had to make decisions that would help end World War 2 as quickly as possible. Harry Truman became the president of the United States of America on April 12, 1945, after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He came into the presidency of a country that was in the middle of a world war against Germany, other European countries, and Japan. With no experience with foreign policy, he was in charge of ending the war as quickly as possible. The war with Germany was nearly over when he became president.
Nuclear warfare would be an ever-present threat throughout the Cold War, and it affected Americans’ lives. These nuclear anxieties can be seen to be reflected in the many science fiction movies involving monsters created from nuclear destruction, such as Them! ( The science fiction genre specifically grew in popularity because it allowed directors to address the problems of the fifties’ like the Red Scare, McCarthyism through metaphor without fear of censure. Devastation Caused by Atomic Power “To the Congress of the United States: Yesterday, Dec 7, 1941- a date which will live in infamy. ”(Roosevelt) These famous words were spoken by the President and Commander in Chief Franklin D. Roosevelt. The actions by Japan to attack the naval base of Pearl Harbor on United States soil during a point in which we were neutral sent America quickly to declare themselves as part of World War II. “Petition to the President” by Leo Szilard is a letter written to President Roosevelt from a group of the Scientists who help create the atomic bomb.
He was hit with polio in 1921, FDR spent much of his adult life in a wheelchair. A whole generation of Americans grew up knowing no other president, as FDR served four terms in office(16 years). Roosevelt’s social programs reinvented the role of government in Americans ' lives, while his presidency during World War II established the United States ' leadership on the world. The atomic bomb has a background rich with blood of the innocent and guilty alike, but it also has links to freedom and victory. In August of 1945 President Harry S. Truman placed the okay to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, ultimately ending WWII in the Pacific. The atomic bomb made a devastating impact in Japan, but it lead to V-J Day in WWII. Behind the tragedy put on Japan the bomb created an end to suffrage in European countries, Russia, and America. If I had the chance to convince President Truman I would implore he search for other alternative routes than the extremity of the atomic bomb, but if it was the only way I would say he should use the bomb.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt played a key role in US History during the Great Depression and World War II. Navigating America through WWII was perhaps his greatest honor, along with rescuing the country from The Great Depression. However, he may not have been known for either achievement without first entering war. FDR was torn leading up to war, he desperately wanted to actively enter combat, while most of the hurting country was drastically opposed to actively fighting.
All three stories in the packet were very similar in their topics. In all of the stories, multiple groups debate about the atomic bomb. It is evident that in all of the stories, everyone is determined to keep the president from dropping the atomic bomb. In the “Robert Oppenheimer Speech,” Robert Oppenheimer talks about how scientists are anxious waiting for the president’s decision regarding the dropping the atomic bomb.

In todays political climate many countries appear to be on the brink of war. Countries such as the United States, Russia, and North Korea who all have formidable forces of weaponry, are constantly on the verge of a greater warfare by atomic power. Ever since its first test in 1945, the atomic bomb has been considered to be incredibly controversial and dangerous, but also a potential world power changer.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States of America. Roosevelt, who was more commonly known by his initials, FDR, was elected into office in 1933. FDR was the only president to serve for more than two terms. Not only is Roosevelt famous for his three terms, he was also one of the most liberal presidents our nation has ever known. Meaning that, he was a big supporter of equal rights, and opportunities for the working and lower class.
World War Two was a devastating moment in the history of the world. Many people died for their belief in a religion, dictators wanting to control the world, and the creation of the new weapons that can be used to attack others. The new weapons, to be more specific, was the atom bomb. The atom bomb had a code name; the Manhattan Project. The Manhattan Project benefited from extremely intelligent, experienced, and effective leaders.
During the summer of 1945, American leaders were desperately scrambling to find a way to end the second World War. Allied forces ultimately had Japan defeated, but due to pride and traditions in Japan they refused to accept their fate. With Japan’s refusal to surrender and casualties piling up by the thousands, The United States had no other option but to explore a more drastic measure using atomic bombs, Little Boy and Fat Man. Atomic warfare was certainly new, unexplored, dangerous, and experimental to say the least, but Japan left America no other choice. Despite the amount of research done on atomic weapons, no one could have accurately predicted the effect that the atomic bombs would have on Hiroshima and Nagasaki after being dropped.
Edgar Allan Poe's anthology has attracted literary scholars as well as anyone who enjoys a good twisted story for nearly a century. His creative and contorted way of thinking displayed quite immensely through his work. For decades, countless generations have read his stories either throughout their schooling or in their free time. Although the mysteries disclosed through this literary master's work has been resolved, usually by the end of the story, the one surrounding his death is one that has stumped generations. Over the many years since his early termination, there has been many different theories surrounding the cause for this unfortunate event.
The Red Scare also began because of the United States bombing on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in World War 2. But scientists, researchers, and mathematicians were excited for the discovery of nuclear technology because it was the first weapon with the radioactive element, uranium. The theory was straightforward, but the challenge was now how to control it without the bomb blowing itself up. In 1939, Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt warning him about the new weapon. Einstein was concerned that Germany was working on the bomb.
“[T]he world was never to be the same again.” (Stein 27) The dropping of the atom bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a monumental event that changed the course of human history.
