SPM 140 Assignment #5 - Anthony Anzalone 1 The National Football League has a very rich history. There are many aspects of it that make it what it is today. Some of these aspects include the amount of teams in the league, the financial aspect both in terms of salary cap and media deals, and drug testing. There are two conferences, the AFC and NFC, that have 16 teams each. The league is currently considering expansion teams in the future as well, although nothing has materialized with these plans yet. The teams in the NFL have a restriction on how much money they can spend on their roster. This is called the salary cap. The NFL’s salary cap is a hard cap. “The NFL uses a hard cap, meaning that no team is allowed to exceed the cap limit for any reason” (Brooke, 2017). The amount of cap space each team has each year is determined by the value of all streams of revenue for the league. Each team must spend a minimum of 89% of their cap space each year. The league itself must also spend at least 95% of the cap. Signing bonuses are used to persuade players to sign more back-heavy contracts. These bonuses provide guaranteed money to the player, whether or not they are on the team for the duration of their full contract. There are also many incentives players can earn. Most of these are performance-based and can be for achieving a certain number of statistics, team success, or a Pro Bowl appearance. Overall, the NFL has a good system for managing a team's financial status. SPM 140 Assignment #5 - Anthony Anzalone …show more content…
