Have you ever wondered at why so many Vietnamese people have “Nguyen” as their last name? Back in the day, the dynasty that ruled Vietnam would have the people change their last names to match with their family name. So, people named Nguyen are not all related to one another! One of the dynasties that ruled Vietnam was the Nguyen Dynasty.
The Nguyen Dynasty came to power after the Tay Son Rebellion. Nguyen Anh was the first ruler of the Nguyen Dynasty. The Nguyen Dynasty had 13 rulers; the first ruler was Gia Long, Minh Menh, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, Duc Duc, Hiep Hoa, Kien Phuc, Ham Nghi, Dong Khanh, Thanh Thai, Duy Tan, Khai Dinh, and Bao Dai. The Nguyen Dynasty ruled the southern part of Vietnam before they fully took control of Vietnam. The Trinh’s took north Vietnam and Nguyen’s took south Vietnam. They constantly competed for power and control over each other’s territory. This resulted in a war that lasted from 1627-1673. This huge war went on and on. In the end both of the families decided to stop fighting each other and to just rule their parts of Vietnam. In the 18th century, both the Nguyens and the Trinhs had a new enemy, the Tay Son brothers who led a rebellion. This rebellion was led by Nguyen Nhac, Nguyen Lu, and Nguyen Hue. The Tay Son Rebellion weakened the control and authority of the Nguyen Dynasty. At an advantage, the Trinh’s also helped the brothers attack the Nguyen’s. Many of the Nguyens died when the Tay Son brothers attacked the province successfully. They captured the capitol of the southern region of Vietnam at that time: Hue.
