The novel begins when Nick Carraway moves to “West Egg” an island just out of the city. He is disgusted with his neighbor Jay Gatsby (formally known as James Gatz) for most of the novel. However I would like to postulate that Nick and Gatsby may be the same person. Nick is how Fitzgerald would like be. Nick is an honest man and an outsider. He is shocked to see all the affairs and lying. He has always felt out of place in the company of all the wealthy people. In spite of this he is the only one to truly understand Gatsby. Gatsby is how other people see him. A “playboy”, carefree, and wealthy and lavish. In his heart he is actually pretending. He spent all his life trying to impress Daisy the person he loves the most. In the end she betrays
