The controversy surrounding US mega star rapper Nicki Minaj did not stop her from performing at a holiday concert in Luanda Angola. According to Afkinsider.com, Nicki Minaj replaced the lyrics of her single hit “Only” to “Independent women only” as a dedication to Angolan women. Minaj 33, appeared at a packed stadium on December 19 at the Unitel sponsored Boas Festas concert. The company is controlled by Isabel dos Santos, Africa’s richest woman and the daughter of Angola president Jose dos Santos, who has been in power for close to 40 years. A New York based charity organization Human Rights Foundation had previously called upon Minaj to cancel the tour over criticism of Angolan president’s human rights violations.

The founder of Human Rights Foundation, Thor Halvorssen had asked Minaj to cancel the much publicized concert in the wake of the arrest of Luaty Beirao, an Angolan hip hop artist. Beirao was arrested in June after attending a pro-democracy meeting. The famed musician, who has long been held as the status of black feminist icon is a strong proponent of women empowerment.
