Ralph Emerson is the author of the book Nature. Within this book he states that people should not accept knowledge from the past. People should go out and experience the world for themselves and make their own opinions. Any question that someone may have can be answered through life experience and nature. Friedrich Nietzsche is the author of On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense. In this text, he states that truth is an illusion created by humans and that language is lacking truth because we speak in metaphors. Nietzsche also states that the words we are using are not unique enough which causes us to categorize everything. Emerson and Nietzsche’s lives and work are quite similar and different all at the same time. This is what makes these two writers so intriguing. …show more content…

Nietzsche was born on October 15, 1844 in Germany and Emerson was born on May 25, 1803 in Massachusetts (Biography.com). Both Nietzsche and Emerson had fathers that were employed by the church which explains their religious background. Both men went to college but took separate paths. Nietzsche went to the university of Bonn and then transferred to the University of Leipzig to study philology where he then became a professor. Emerson first went to Boston Latin School then he went to Harvard University and became a licensed minister (Biography.com). These men suffered a great loss in their life. Nietzsche lost his father at four years old and Emerson lost his wife just three years after they got married. They were followers of the Christian faith but eventually abandoned the church.
