Some may argue that is okay to use the N-Word because they say it is just a word. In the article of “Rules for A word” by Jeremy Gagby he say that “Nigga is a word frequently heard in school, music, and on the streets.” This is the point that some people are arguing about, the word is used in songs and kids use it all the time and this is why they do not think it is a big deal. People may think that as time passes and other meanings of this word become popular, that it is acceptable to use this word. Newer generations have a completely different use for this
The author presents the readers with different experiences of what occurs in her everyday life. Each example contains racist actions although not drastic it’s subtle enough to be detected by people of color that might be oblivious to white people. These daily racists actions whether intentional or not are micro aggressions meaning that they are instances of racism that are communicated to people of color on a daily basis. The term micro aggression is linked with the text since each piece of text is an example of it that the author, Rankine, has experienced through and multiple people go through.
Nigger is a noun in the English language. It had originally come from the Spanish/ Portuguese variation of Negro, which originated from the Latin adjective Niger. It was first used by John Rolfe to explain the first African slave ships in Virginia during 1619. In
African Americans had an extremely pivotal role in the outcome and consequences of the Civil War. This group of people were enslaved, and forced to work in horrible conditions, for the whole day, without pay. Slaves were one of the main causes of the Civil War. The issue of Slavery, which resulted in the eventual economic and social division between the North and South, caused the creation of the Confederate States. African Americans did not only unintentionally cause the war, but they also effected the outcome of the war, and the eventual consequences the nation would face after the war.
Another way to combat prejudice is by teaching against it to the upcoming generation. Atticus teaches Scout and Jem that demoralizing vocabulary should not be used, especially against black people. He says to them, nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don 't mean anythinglike snot-nose. It 's hard to explainignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody 's favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It 's slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand” -Abraham Lincoln. President Lincoln was utterly correct when he stated this, the Civil War brought a great amount of tension amongst the states. In the northern states the war began as fight against the succession of the Confederate states from the Union. While in the south fought against the threat to their everyday lives, which one major part was slavery. Throughout the Civil War over 620,000 soldiers lives were lost and among those deaths 40,000 of them were the lives of African-American soldiers.
During the Civil War the Union Army and slaves faced many hardships. Many problems surfaced during the Civil War whether it was for the Army or for the African Americans serving in the Army in the North. Not only were the African Americans fighting for the Union, they were fighting for their own freedom as well. The African Americans were not only helping themselves, but improving the union army. Even though they might have been considered equal to the Union, they were not always treated as equals compared to other white soldiers.
….Today, April 9th, 1865, the Civil War came to an end. With the victory of the Union, us African Americans can be free. I’m not from the South. However, living in Philadelphia isn’t any better. I am a literal black sheep of the world, everyone lives in.
In the years of the Civil War, African Americans played an important role in contributing to the Union Army and the confederate army. A great deal of African American men volunteered to join the Union Army but only after they gained freedom did they participate in fighting the war. Besides the Union Army, there was the confederate army which consisted of slave labor whom were forced to aid the confederacy following their masters. Later in the war, the Confederacy ran short on men and were in need to supply soldiers, leaving no choice but to enlist the colored men. Not only were African American men impacted from the war, but African American women also served to supply and aid in the war.
During the beginning of the Civil War, African Americans were banned from enlisting into the federal army due to President Lincoln's decision. The Union stated that the war was “a white man’s war” as Ohio congressman Chilton A. White described the American government was made “for white men to be administered, protected, defended and maintained by white men”. [Book] Some slaves fled the South and were called “contraband”, coined term by General Benjamin F. Butler ; they were put to work for the Union. Despite opposition from the president, African-Americans formed militia in hope to be called for service in many areas in the North. Some blacks felt they owed no allegiance to this county.
“A Talk to Teachers” Questions 1-12 1. Baldwin establishes with his audience that he is not a teacher and like all of them lives in a dangerous time. He establishes his ethos by telling his audience that he is not (a teacher) and that he is (a fellow citizen who like them lives in a dangerous time). 2.
The three different but similar events all had something in common for people’s equality. The 1st event that happened was the Sojourner Truth speech in 1815, at the Women 's Convention in Akron, Ohio and it was focused on women 's equality. The second event that occured was the Civil War that went on from 1861 to 1865, and the reason behind the Civil War was to put an end to slavery, so slaves can have equality. The Final event that happens during the Civil war was the Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln and it was to honor the fallen soldiers who died during the Civil War or the Battle of Gettysburg, and he also gave a reminder that all men are created equal, which is kinda like people’s equality. The reason that people are fighting is because they all want equality and that means the state of being equal, especially in status, rights, and opportunities.
In the dictionary nigger is defined as a contemptuous term for a black or dark-skinned person. During slavery it was used as a way for white people to oppress slaves, and after slavery was ended it was still used to oppress and demean black people. This is why the word nigger is such a loaded word. After the civil rights movement, the black community reclaimed the n-word.
• I never had any encounters with another race in my neighborhood, all the people around me were very kind.
