The Holocaust and slavery were both tragic events that leave a very important role in our history today. Because of this, they have many similarities and differences, and both the texts, “Night” and, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” prove that. In the dictionary the word inhumane means, “Without compassion for misery or suffering; cruel.” I don’t know about you, but if i were to describe the Holocaust and slavery in one word it would definitely be that. They both share many cruel similarities like they were not given enough food, they were given little clothes, and they were forced to work and were treated very harshly. First of all, they were not given enough food. In the text, “Night” it states, “In the mornings: black coffee. At midday: soup. By the third day I was eagerly eating any kind of soup.” In comparison to that, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” says, “The men and women slaves received their monthly allowance of food, eight pounds of pork, or its equivalent in fish, and one bushel of corn meal.” Not only were they not given enough food, but they were also given very little clothes. In the text, “Night” it says, “Meir Katz, a colossus, wore a child’s pants, and Stern, a skinny little fellow, was floundering in a huge jacket.” Then just like the Jews, the text, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” says, “Their yearly clothes consist of two coarse linen shirts, one pair of linen trousers…” Lastly, they both were forced to work and were treated very harshly. It states in the text, “Night” page 38, “It is a concentration camp. Here you must work.” In comparison to that “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” page 31 says, “for when there days work in the field is done, the most of them having their washing, mending, and cooking to do, and having few or none of the ordinary facilities for doing either of these, very many of there sleeping hours are consumed in preparing the field the coming day.” All of these cruel comparisons show how similar they …show more content…

For Instance, the slaves were given punishment, but Jews got death. “Night” shows this on page 38 when it says, “If you don't, you'll go straight to the chimney.” Then in, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” on page 31 it states, “I have seen him whip a woman, causing the blood to run half an hour at the time”. The next difference is their persecution was based on race for slavery and religion for Jews. It says this when people were referring to everyone else not by their names but just as Jews. It shows this on page 28 in, “Night,” it says, “Jews, look!” Then in, “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” page 30 it talks about all the slaves saying, “Colonel Lloyd kept 300-400 slaves.” The last difference is that Jews were transported but slaves were born into slavery. It shows this in,“Night” on page 27, “But we were pulling into a station. Someone near a window read to us: “Auschwitz.” As you can see even though they both share many similarities, they also show
