A Russian novelist, Fyodor Dostoevski, once said:“There is only one thing that I dread; not to be worthy of my suffering” (Frankl). Suffering opens opportunities to achieve something great, ultimately adding meaning to one’s life. But if one doesn’t take that opportunity, he or she will miss out the chance to do something great and will not deem worthy of their suffering. Night by Elizer Wiesel is a historical fiction book about his experience through many different German concentration camps as a Jewish Romanian during the Holocaust. Elie loses his family, suffered through considerable hardship, and lived through the worst time in humanity. Through Elie’s time in the concentration camps, he is exposed to the loss of his family and suffering that lead to the destruction of his religion, his identity, and his faith in humanity. His journey to find meaning is similar to a concept called logotherapy. “Suffering is an ineradicable part of life, even as fate and death. Without suffering and death, human life cannot be complete”(Frankl). Logotherapy is the pursuit to find meaning of life through suffering. Elie experienced tremendous amounts of suffering during the holocaust. Once it was over, Elie started to publish books about his experience in concentration camps and wanted to become the voice of others who could not express themselves. “I have published 47 books, but I feel like I have only begun. I haven’t done enough” (Interview). Elie wrote books about the holocaust so the world would know what happened in the camp. What Elie wrote about the Holocaust only expresses a small proportion of what really went on in the concentration camps, so Elie felt that it wasn’t enough to capture the whole image.
