The book Night by Elie Wiesel is an incredibly written memoir about his struggle through the Holocaust. I have chosen to look at the motifs in this memoir. A motif is symbol or image that is constantly referred to in the text. In this paper we will focus on the motif of night and it’s significance to the story telling.
Eyes are described as “the windows to the soul” in many works. In Night, a memoir by Elie Wiesel, it is a common motif. The book focuses on the story of Eliezer, a young boy, during the bulk of the Holocaust. It tells how he made it through the first days in the concentration camp and all of the tragedy that occurred during his experience there. Throughout the novel, the author uses eyes to describe the emotions and feelings of many of the novel’s characters.
In Elie's Wiesel Memoir, Night, the motif of relationships reveals the theme of importance of family by showing the impact that Wiesel's family had on him before he was taken to the camp, when he lost his mother and sister, and when he lost his dad. In the beginning of the Memoir the importance of family relating to the motif relationship is revealed through their relationship. Their relationship stays the same in the beginning. In the memoir Elie says “We decided to take turns sitting” This quote shows how Elie’s family and friends were working as if they were one big family.
Night is a book reflected through the author’s emotions—visually, mentally, and physically. These emotions are condensed within the theme of Night, which was his loss of religious faith. The theme itself was reflected off the author’s experiences, hence the necessity of author’s craft. Elie Wiesel’s experiences of losing his father (physically and mentally) and watching innocent adults and children die (visually and physically) develops how the author is telling the story. In his loss of religious faith, he questioned God: “Why should I bless His name?
Night by Elie Wiesel is a book about a boy and his family being deported to concentration camps and going through very rough experiences. Not unlike many writers, Wiesel takes his pieces and expresses them through emotions or words. These words and/or expressions help the reader feel what the character in the book is feeling. The ways Wiesel expresses the way Elie feels is through imagery, literary devices, and first person point of view. Elie Wiesel uses Imagery to express the character’s thoughts and feelings by explaining in great detail parts of a book to make the reader picture a scene or image.
The following three authors, Elie Wiesel, Santha Rau, and Kimberly Blaeser wrote memoirs or autobiographies. They did this to keep history from repeating itself, to show personal growth and its relation to one's identity, and to provide reasoning for one's educational values. To start with, In the book Night, Elie Wiesel makes imagery a priority in writing his memoir to stain the minds of readers with the unfortunate events that took place in the holocaust to prevent history from repeating itself. In the memoir, Elie Wiesel spends a portion of his life at a concentration camp. In the camp, inhumane actions were at an all time high.
a. How does Elie Wiesel reveal character in Night? Throughout Night characters are revealed directly. Elie’s observations, descriptions, and narrations show us character development. Methods utilized frequently are interactions between people, family bonds, descent into death, desperation for survival, indifference to the well-being of others, as well as generosity and selflessness to their fellow man.
Starvation, genocide, sickness. All are components of the Holocaust. The Holocaust began in 1941 where several million of innocent Jews and others died. Many people have asked why America did not step in earlier. If America would have stepped in earlier, the Germans would have started killing the people in the concentration camps more quickly.
Explanation: This is an important way the author uses imagery to convey a key event in the story because in this quote Elie’s father is dealt a fateful blow that leads to his death. This relates to the theme of family because of his fathers death, but also because the last word that Elie’s father said was his name. This leads me to the conclusion that in times of death, the most important thing is family. Evidence (and page number): “He began beating him with an iron bar. At first, my father simply doubled over under the blows, but then he seemed to break in two like an old tree struck by lightning.
Write two paragraphs about the setting of the book. The setting of Night is one of the most important things in the book. Night takes place in one of the worst concentration camps in the world. This camp, named Auschwitz, was in Poland and was still operational until January 27, 1945.
Elie Wiesel’s relationship with God changes during his time in Auschwitz. He becomes angry with God for letting His own creations starve, torture, and mercilessly murder His devout worshippers. Wiesel cannot understand why his creator would open “six crematoria working day and night” to slaughter human beings (Wiesel 67). He does not trust God to be just any longer, for “every fiber in [him rebels]” (67). Wiesel feels he is stronger than the God whom he was bound to for so long, and he “no longer [accepts] God’s silence” (69).
Night Paper Assignment Night, by Elie Wiesel, is a tragic memoir that details the heinous reality that many persecuted Jews and minorities faced during the dark times of the Holocaust. Not only does Elie face physical deprivation and harsh living conditions, but also the innocence and piety that once defined him starts to change throughout the events of his imprisonment in concentration camp. From a boy yearning to study the cabbala, to witnessing the hanging of a young child at Buna, and ultimately the lack of emotion felt at the time of his father 's death, Elie 's change from his holy, sensitive personality to an agnostic and broken soul could not be more evident. This psychological change, although a personal journey for Elie, is one that illustrates the reality of the wounds and mental scars that can be gained through enduring humanity 's darkest times.
The use of symbolism in literary writing is essential. In this case, Wiesel uses the symbolism of “night” to strengthen his novel Night. He uses the significance of “night” to address the turning point for Elie, to show important events that occur during the night and to emphasize the importance of his life span. First, “night” addresses the turning point for Eliezer.
My theme for night was the preservation of self over others. Throughout the book many people become selfish and start to care only of themselves including Elie. The reason why I chose this as my theme is because I find it very interesting how under certain situations people change very rapidly. Elie soon comes to realize this , but does little to change it. Mostly ,because he needs to be this way in order to survive.
The road to a relationship with God is not straight, it is ever changing with challenges and curves and ups and downs. This is a main theme in the memoir Night, by Elie Wiesel, where Elie has a struggling relationship with God. He thinks that God has abandoned him and his dad so he does not feel the need to continue his relationship with God. Elie was excited about his faith but the holocaust makes him feel angry and confused with God. Elie 's faith excites him from a young age and he wants to learn more about God.
