The poem of Nikki Giovanni’s “Dream” proves how discrimination can make a huge impact in humans life’s, but the theme of the poem basically blames society and racism for the results of African Americans. Racism restricted many blacks from achieving their big dreams. Whereas, Giovanni indicates personal experience of her being isolated, explaining how she wishes to make a change in the society. However the poet utilized little elements to develope such strong theme. She does this through the use of simple diction, imagery, tone, allusion, and juxtaposition.

Therefore she being young and innocent has such strong meaning that age doesn’t matter when viewing the society. This view made a huge impact all through her childhood and even when she “grew and matured,” by still having the same perspective of the society. Therefore her tone is upsetting and dissapointing. The reason of her dissapointment is because she knew that all her dreams will always be unrealistic for being an African American. This emphasize reality for the fact how she desperatly desired to shift her society for a better cause, and achieve freedom in her, however she “became more sensible and decided [she] would settle down.” It demostrates the poet’s attitude from trying to be successful to just seeing the reality of the situation she is facing and giving up on her
