Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla’s Early Life

Nikola Tesla was born on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, Croatia

Father and Mother
Tesla’s Father was a preacher in the Serbian Orthodox church.
His mother invented small home appliances(runs in the family) and took care of the family farm.

Tesla’s Brother
Tesla’s brother died when Tesla was 7-years old. He died in a riding accident. After this, Tesla started seeing visions, this was the start of his life-long mental illness

College
Tesla studied math and physics at the Technical University at Graz and also studied philosophy at the University of Prague.

Mid-Life

In 1884, Tesla comes to the United States and works with Thomas Edison

Westinghouse
Between 1887 and 1888 Tesla made more than 30 patents, and also in 1888 Westinghouse bought all of Tesla’s patents for $60,000 in cash and stock in his company.

Edison vs Tesla
Edison wanted to show the word how dangerous AC power(Tesla invented this) was. Edison had a convicted murderer on death row to be killed via AC-powered electric chair. Even though it was effective, AC is still the standard we use today(for the electric grid)

Wardenclyffe Tower
The construction of the WardenClyffe Tower started in 1901 and was backed by J.P. Morgan. It was built on Long Island and was meant for wireless power. It was eventually razed in 1917

Developed the current standard today, Alternating Current(AC)
In February 1882 Tesla Discovered the rotating magnetic field for AC motors
Developed AC motor and AC generation
He Invented the Tesla Coil, which generates high voltages and frequencies
Developed the first hydroelectric power plant in Niagara Falls
