It is extremely difficult to hear about the burden of a school shooting. But experiencing the actual affects of living in the town where the shooting was is much more difficult. In Nineteen Minutes, the town of Sterling, New Hampshire is completely turned upside down by the happenings of a school shooting by a present student. Many families and lives are changed dramatically. It seems as if this town will never be the same. This paper will include predicting, connecting, and questioning.
The first active reading strategy that will be used is predicting how Josie will continue to cope with the loss of her beloved boyfriend, Matt. Also, the actions that Peter Houghton’s lawyer, Jordan, is going to take will also be predicted. Josie was living a regular teenage life, little did she know that her boyfriend was going to be ripped away from her. This book reminds me of many school shootings that happen around the United States. Recently, school shootings have been an atrocious and reoccurring event. The sequence of events in this novel sounds a lot like the cold facts of the Columbine High School shooting. Troubled teens premeditated a school shooting because of how they were treated amongst their other peers all through out school. “Peter picked it up and wrapped it around his waist. The cotton was sopping wet, and he was crying, but he thought maybe people couldn’t tell because the rest of him was dripping, too. Everyone was staring” (Picoult 148). This quote shows how Peter was a troubled teenager, and how he had difficulty dealing with all of the bullying going on. The shooting in this novel can be connected to other shooting that have happened around the United
