There are many video game companies to choose from, but the one that stands out the most in my opinion is Nintendo. Overall they were the ones to sky rocket the video game market and video game console success. Nintendo was founded in 1889 and is the oldest video game company (Mäkinen). It originally started out as a game cards company. In the 1970’s they chose to go down a different route with the video game market and come out with their very own console. They started out with arcade games such Mario Bros and Donkey Kong which was designed by Shigeru Miyamoto, at this point in time he was unknown (Mäkinen). The console went on to outsell their competitors Sega. They wanted to bring their console to the United States, but due to the video game crash of 1983 they couldn’t because companies were not interested in investing into video games at this time. Nintendo chose to rebrand themselves to make a better impression on companies in the United States. They changed their name from the classic FamiCon to Nintendo Entertainment System also known as NES (Mäkinen). The system was huge on with the game Mario Bros launching with the console. Nintendo dominated everyone in the 8 bit console market. One of the coolest features of Nintendo Entertainment System was the joystick. It came with direction buttons which became a standard going from her on a controller/joystick. Something else Nintendo did that many companies before them could of learned from was they licensed gaming companies to make games for their console. Before this many companies didn’t allow for anyone, but them to make games for their consoles. This ultimately was the reason behind the video game crash of 1983(Mäkinen).
