Touring the Tulsa Cancer Institute treatment floor I saw a variety of cancers, they include; lung, bladder, and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The type of cancer I primarily focused on was Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I was not present when the nurse first assessed the patient, but whenever he had a new medication to hang the nurse would always make sure that the medication matched the name on his ID bracelet and his MAR. My patient has Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and his primary treatment is chemotherapy. Before determining what type of chemotherapy my patient would receive he had to go through a variety of testing. The doctor also expects the patient to be out of remission within two years after his last chemo treatment. “The main types of treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma are: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, stem cell transplant and in rare cases, surgery is also used” (Non Hodgkin Lymphoma). My patient has only received chemotherapy and he has three sessions left. Upon completion of his chemotherapy I expect my patient to speak with a dietician, a financial counselor, and his physician. I believe that he will seek help from a dietician because he has verbalized having a minimal appetite, a financial counselor so that he and his family can arrange payments for all of the treatment bills, and his physician for follow up care. Specialists aren’t completely sure on what causes non-Hodgkin’s, lymphoma, but they do know “occurs when your body produces too many abnormal lymphocytes- a type of white blood cell”(Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma-Mayo Clinic).
