This act banned all people of Chinese nationality from immigrating to Canada.
I thought that I really did not have to put myself into the immigrants ' shoes, because I am an immigrant. I came when I was in 3rd grade. I remember the first time that I went to an elementary school in a different country, beside Korea. Obviously, the two countries had different curriculum of learning and it was in a language that I barely knew. It was very hard for me to get used to all the situations, especially when someone is making fun of me just because I could not speak an language that they speak and they have spread rumors of me.
I was born in South America, Guyana in a family that consists of seven girls. In the summer of 1990, my family moved from Guyana to South Beach Miami, Florida. Unbeknown to me I was in one of the world’s liveliest areas renowned for fashion. I was intrigued to find so many people excited about their hair, clothes, makeup, shoes, jewelry, nails, and body types. I grew up in a very diverse neighborhood.
Some intervention strategies that can help minimize structural violence directly affecting Aboriginal women in Canada. There is not enough academic research and literatures on the conflict. According to Cooper & Salomons (2010) this is because the research involves “such contentious and politically divisive topic as the ongoing effects of colonization, government-sanctioned/legislated racism, and the unethical behaviours of law enforcement in their investigations into the disappearance and murders of Aboriginal women. ”(4). Due to these reasons, Cooper & Salomons (2010) said it is difficult to secure funding for and difficult to publish research on this conflict.
As an immigrant, it is possible to live in two different worlds which are miles apart. The immigrant passes through identity development phases where they are faced with communication and integration problems. As a result, it is possible to be viewed as less intelligent or ignorant which is not the case because all they have is a communication barrier. Language is an avenue of self expression that brings out what is in the heart but without one the immigrant becomes voiceless. On a personal case, this disintegrates all the optimism that I had when coming to the US making the task of completing my education insurmountable.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, departments that serve less than 2,500 people are 84.4% white and departments that serve millions are 53.4% white (as cited in Fifield, 2016). Notably, Over the years, a lack of diversity within law enforcement has become a pertinent issue. Notably, the underrepresentation of minorities within law enforcement influences the relationship between communities and law enforcement by engendering distrust with law enforcement. To say nothing of, underrepresentation of minorities have had many people question whether departments mirror a diverse community. Nevertheless, with that being said, underrepresentation of minorities have generated tension and distrust between communities and law enforcement and many believe that police department need to mirror the race composition within their cities.
