Americans face problems with resolving issues involving the complexities of racial representation because of a possessive investment in “whiteness”; which forms the concept of white privilege, a form of contemporary racism that surpasses the black and white binary. Whiteness is a social construction developed overtime viewing beliefs, values behaviors, habits and attitudes as the accepted norm. It is an invisible and structured form of contemporary racism heavily suffused within American culture allowing for the willful allocation of rewards to white people giving them a social, economic and political advantages within racial hierarchy; also known as white privilege. Non-white Americans are often systematically placed at a dis-advantage within the socially and politically structured racial hierarchy by Americans due to the occurrence of white privilege. The racial hierarchy is based on skin color, viewing darker skinned Americans as less privileged and lighter skinned Americans as more privileged. Within all status hierarchies, however, dominant and subordinate groups always occur and advantaged along with disadvantaged groups occur. White privilege includes receiving various unearned advantages have not been labeled, stereotyped and discriminated against in the past and present because, as individuals, are apart of a favored group or groups because of the norm of whiteness. White American’s are allowed to receive valuable privileges that are denied to non-white Americans simply because of their skin color. An important privilege gained by white Americans is the ease of access to power and resources purely because of their skin color. Access to privileges is an essential asset that supports the cultivation of the progressing development of innate abilities to ensure a positive outlook in the future.
