“Plainswoman” by Williams Forrest is about a woman named Nora who moved out west with her husband, Rolf. In this short story, Nora has two flashbacks that tell her journey from New England to her new home on a ranch in the west. When you try new things, you might be afraid in the beginning that by the end of the situation, you won’t be scared anymore and will be a stronger person as a result. In the beginning of the story, it takes place when Rolf and his men are out on the ranch for the spring roundup of the cattle. “Pleny, a handyman, who was to do the chores and lessen her fears” the author is setting up that Nora is scared about being in the newly settled West. “After a time they were on a rough train that ran among hills and plains, and after a while there was nothing to see but an endless space with spring lying flat on it in small colorful flowers and with small bleak towns in erratic spaces, and the men on the train laughed roughly and smelled of whiskey.” This is describing to the reader how different the West is than the East, where Nora is more comfortable. Nora was probably very frightened of how the men were acting, “Some men rode on the roof of the car and kicked their heels, fired guns and sang to the wild accordion,” in New England the way they are acting it wouldn’t be acceptable and would certainly would make someone new to the West very scared. “’I didn’t know,’ she said. ‘I didn’t know how awful it could be’” Nora was just having a nightmare and Rolf had to take her outside since other people were where they were sleeping. “It seems to me that living here would be a lot better if people thought more about people” Nora was talking to Pleny about how she disagrees with people needing cattle for things to go well for them, in turn making it able for them to stay in the West. Making people have to have cattle for them to be able to stay in the West will limit the amount of people who would want to possibly move since it is also combining with the issue that there aren’t very many towns or laws. “Nora knew it would take eight to ten days for the boy to get to the nearest doctor.” She was afraid that something bad would happen to the young boy on his journey to the doctor to get his broken leg fixed.
