Ciara Campos Sociology 210 March 28, 2017 Norms Breaking Television A TV program that I like that shows deviance is Dexter. It used to air years ago and till this day I’m still obsessed with it. This show is very entertaining about a serial killer who pretends to be “normal” and blend in with everybody else in his crazy life. Dexter Morgan is from Miami and is a blood splatter expert who solves murders but actually lowkey commits them. The twist is, he only murders people who are guilty which makes him feel somewhat okay with his lifestyle choices. For the first three seasons or so it’s being celebrated but once you get to the finale you start seeing why it’s condemned. When I first started watching this show, I believed Dexter could be the normal guy and still live a happy life doing what he does. I honestly thought he was going to get away with all these murders and still manage to live happy with his son and be a good father. In addition, there were just so many scenes in which his killings felt justified and right because he ends up helping others get rid of the bad people. But, towards the end of the show, the last few episodes (I really hate the ending of this show) it is crystal clear that he ends up ruining the lives around him and he realizes that he will never be able to have normal conversations with his loved ones. The only way to not kill or hurt everyone he cares about is for him to go as far away from everyone. Not only did this show give me so much anxiety and stress for wanting Dexter and Debra to have a nice normal life, but it gave me a new perspective as well. I felt like I was in Dexter’s mind and it made me think of death a lot as well as just questioning literally every stranger I ran into if they were a serial killer. It’s a really dark show that makes you think a lot about really disturbing things, it makes you think about something people typically wouldn’t do on a normal daily
