In the short story Norma by Sonia Sanchez, Sonia is in middle school. She does not have a very good math teacher, Mr. Castor, who does not really help his students. Sonia loves french class, but one day Norma snapped at the teacher and left the room. Sonia kind of look up to Norma, so after she did not like french, Sonia started to dislike french class. Which is sad because that was one of Norma’s favorite classes. They have now started high school and and Sonia does not really pay much attention to Norma, until one day in the cafeteria and everyone was talking about how Norma got pregnant and expelled. Norma got expelled during freshman year because she got pregnant. In the cafeteria with all the rumors that it was true, that was where she kind of thought that she should not have looked up to her. They did not have any contact throughout the rest of high school and most of college. Sonia never made an effort to see Norma and probably forgot about her, because she needed a good role model and Norma was not one. Another reason was in the last year or so of college when Sonia was sitting in the library studying. Norma was there with her four kids and went over to Sonia. Norma was in really bad shape and was also doing drugs. Sonia now saw a completely different person since freshman year. This made Sonia really disappointed, because she had looked up to her and now norma has ruined her life. Finally the reason why Norma disappointed Sonia, was because Norma was so intelligent and her life had fallen apart. During grade school Norma had been so popular and really smart, and since freshman year her life tumbled down. It changed Sonia’s whole perspective on who Norma really was.
