Norman Rockwell was a famous American painter born in New York City in 1894. While Norman Rockwell had talent at an early age, his talent was not noticed until he was in the eighth grade when his teacher allowed him to decorate the school with his chalk drawings. This was a great motivator for Rockwell and motivated him to pursue art school in his later years. Before attending art school, Norman Rockwell did have several jobs, one of which was mail delivery to where he landed a job as Ethel Barrymore’s assistant. Norman Rockwell would travel with Ethel Barrymore helping her set up her paint supplies and easel. After this job and in his Sophomore year, Norman Rockwell decided that he wanted to the National Academy of Design, an art school in New York City where he studied with Thomas Fogarty and George Bridgman. Norman Rockwell learned to do illustrations under Fogarty’s instruction and at the age of 15, Norman Rockwell was hired to paint four Christmas cards and then soon hired as the art director of Boy’s Life. When Norman Rockwell was 21 he began working with a cartoonist named Clyde Forsythe where they produced work for Life magazine, Literary Digest, and Country Gentleman. .
