University of Carolina-Chapel Hill (UNC), the nation’s first university, is a leader in global higher education. UNC has earned a reputation as one of the best universities in the world, and is known for its innovative teaching, research, and public service. UNC prides itself on a strong diverse student body, academic opportunities that are rare to find anywhere else, and a value unmatched by any public university in the nation. The leadership structure in North Carolina is quite similar to any other university. There is leadership for the whole school, the administration; leadership within the students, student government; and leadership in departments, professors. UNC embraces the commitment to teach a diverse community of undergraduates, graduates, and professional students to become the next generation of leaders.

The department that interests me the most is the Environmental Sciences and Engineering department, because math and science has always been something I was interested by and excelled in. UNC’s Environmental Sciences and Engineering department focuses on the interface between people and the environment. They try to determine how these two components relate and interact with one another at the moment. The department is very interdisciplinary due to its work with air quality and atmospheric processes, human exposure and health effects, and sustainable water resources. The department’s research strengths include developing engineering and policy solutions to environmental risks, characterizing exposures to contaminants in air, water, soil, and workplaces, understanding diseases caused by toxic substances in environments, and overcoming environmental health challenges in developing
