Katherine Dettwyler is author of Dancing Skeletons: Life and Death in West Africa and an American Anthropologist. Her work for this book is specifically concentrated on her inquisitiveness for nutritional anthropology in malnourished West African children by researching health and infant cultural practices. “Dance me Outside” by W. P. Kinsella tells the story of little Margaret Wolfchild, an eighteen year old Indigenous mother who is brutally murdered by Clarence Gaskell at the Blue Quills Dance Hall (21). The film by the same name attempts to convey a similar message, but there are key differences such as overlooking the Gaskell’s trial. The broader scope of film allows for the story to be told through multiple perspectives, aiding in rounding out the characters and providing them with a realistic dynamism. For ten years, Northup lives under the tyranny of Mr. Epps. He is a very cruel master. A whip is constantly in his hand, and he uses it almost daily on his slaves. Solomon describes his life under Epps in detailed stories of abuse, humiliation, and deprivation among not only him, but all the slaves. He also mentions Patsey, a slave girl who gets the worst of Epps’ treatment.
Epps used Northup both as an artisan slave and as a field hand, occasionally leasing him out to sugar planters and processors. Dirty Dancing was released in 1987. The film clip I chose was from the end of the season talent show. Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) approaches Baby’s (Jennifer Grey) table and tells her father “Nobody puts baby in a corner.”
The writer does not hide his contempt for those slaveholders characterized as “blood-seeking wretches.” (Twelve Years a Slave 125) Such slaveholders as Tibeats and Edwin Epps, another ruthless plantation owner, who buys Solomon from Mr. Williams, fall exactly into such a category. Nonetheless, soon Northup admits that his life on Epp’s plantation proves to be even worse than working with Tibeats. The writer notes that Epps never spares his whip to extract obedience from the “niggers.” Moreover, “being fond of the bottle” and various violent amusements, Epps repeatedly makes his slaves dance for him in the middle of the night or lashes them around his yard with his whip “just for the pleasure of hearing them screech and scream.”
Northup goes into great depth when explaining the daily tasks of enslaved people, which slows down the narrative and forces audiences to give their attention to this section of the novel. “The fears and labors of another day begin; and until its close there is no such thing as rest,” Northup explains to the audience, using a cyclical pattern while describing the constant fears. The sentences in this section flow into each other creating a sense of repetition and endlessness, which reflects the constant pain and fear running in the veins of enslaved people. Northup includes this image and description of the daily lives of enslaved people in juxtaposition to Ford’s direction of treating enslaved people kindly in order to get the most profit and labor out of them. On the one hand, Northup focuses on Ford’s kind treatment towards his slaves and Ford’s nonviolent beliefs regarding the institution of slavery, which makes a respectable argument for slave owners to treat their slaves better.

Samantha Garcia Nile Hartline ENG 105 USE 12187 26 September 2015 Three Dancing Figures, Version C “I think public art (unless there is a specific political or ideological message) should make people feel comfortable, and brighten their environment.” As I walked through the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, there were a few sculptures that I found appealing but the one sculpture that caught my eye in particular was the Untitled Three Dancing Figures. The sculpture itself has an interesting design in which all of the Dancing Figures are touching each other and it seems as if the figures are marching and dancing in order. The sculpture was designed by Keith Haring in 1989, but was not assembled until 2009 when John and Mary Pappajohn commissioned
Guy Vanderhaeghe, author of “Dancing Bear”, explores both internal and external conflicts that man faces within society and within himself. Vanderhaeghe’s writing is intended to point out the importance and struggle of survival in literature. His work also presents the lives of those living troubled or dealing with a disability (Heath). The struggles of man versus man and man versus society are strongly spoken of within “Dancing Bear”. Vanderhaeghe describes a story of emotional battles of survival.

In this essay I will be talking about the similarities and differences between the text, as well as the significance of the text, the audience, purpose and stylistic and formal features (filmic devices). First of all, the similarities between the two films. There are a number of components that are similar.
Lawrence Humes 10/ 27/15 AP Art History Research Paper This painting is the Dancing Couple created by Jan Steen. Steen was a Dutch painter living in the 17th Century. Born In 1626 in Leiden, he was raised by a family of wealthy Catholics. He was educated at a Latin School and learned from Nicolaes Knupfer, his teacher at school from where he traces his style.
The scene begins with a wide shot of all the slaves standing in a line with their heads hung low whilst their master roams freely. This shot is used to give the audience an initial idea of the dominance Epps feels and the haggard nature of the slaves. The director then uses a strategic panning shot of the slave's faces as Epps strides behind them criticizing the males work efforts like a drill sergeant disciplining his soldiers. This shot accompanies his first quote to make him appear intimidating to a greater extent and to radiate the feeling of disdain towards the slaves. Furthermore, as Epps moves on to admire Patsey’s work the director complements this controversial statement concerning Epps owning Patsey by using an uncomfortable two shot of Epps standing behind Patsey.
