In the late parts of the 19th century, the United States was in turmoil. Beginning in April of 1861, the division within the country boiled over and the Civil War began. There were many arguments over the morality of slavery and other ideologies. Throughout the war there was no clear advantage for either side. However, the North with several advantages and few disadvantages over the South, eventually won and ended the war. During the Civil War, the North had many favorable positions over the South. One advantage that the North had was their economy and infrastructure. The North had a strong economy with a larger amount of money and reserves than the South. Also, the economy of the North was heavily reliant on industry. This was advantageous for them because it meant that they could produce their own supplies for the war. The infrastructure was beneficial to them because they had a large, expansive railroad system. Their railroad system allowed them to transport both troops and materials easily from place to place. The South had many plantations that grew tobacco and cotton. These plantations were the major source of revenue for the Confederacy. Since the South lacked in factories, they struggled to produce all the supplies necessary for the war and had to trade for most of them. The South was also disadvantaged with its railroads. At the start of the war, the South had about half the amount of railroad tracks as the North. Also, the South’s navy at the beginning of the war was non existent, and the Confederacy began finding ways to obtain ships such as attacking Union merchant
